Founded in 1994 by style doyenne, Gwenn LeMoine, Parlor was conceived to be much more than just a hair salon. Parlor was to be a nexus for culture. Uptown meets Downtown, Eastside meets Westside, Democrat meets Republican. Well, let's not go that far. But you get the picture.
Parlor was established in the then-edgy, now-trendy east village. Gwenn wanted to branch out from the "Madison Avenue salon scene." While having lived in the East Village since 1989 watching the East Village couture dress shops flourish, Gwenn realized there was a niche for salons as well. It appeared that this untapped market had an interest in high-quality service previously found only uptown and at steep prices. Parlor began in a 100-sq-ft space on 9th Street and Avenue A and quickly began busting at the seams. Parlor now occupies a double storefront with a garden view. The cutting room floor is set off from the street in a large T shaped open room just steps from Tompkins Square Park.
Today Parlor is a fixture in the East Village attracting a diverse clientele and staff. A hip salon committed to quality service and friendly atmosphere. At Parlor all clients receive a stress relieving shampoo and scalp treatment with their service. Makeup touchups are performed complimentary by request, as are Hand Treatments with a color service. Aveda Comforting Tea, coffee, and wine are served in the reception area. Parlor's intimate and friendly atmosphere makes everyone feel at ease. "My goal for Parlor is to be a place that empowers clients to look and feel their best, not just while at Parlor, but all the time."
